Cartons Hidden Skeletons:

An Essay about Carton and His Problems

Sydney Carton is one of the most dynamic characters in the book A Tale of Two Cities. He is a sad and depressed man that doesn’t carry his head high. Carton also has a drinking problem which is one main reason he is such a wreck. Carton needs to seek help and change his unhealthy lifestyle as soon as he can.

TS-Throughout the book, Carton the man with many problems, has mainly been described in downbeat and depressing ways(alliteration).(appositive) SD- Carton is always the person that is never liked by others, he is like a “Useless piece of furniture, tolerated for its old service and taken no notice of”. (Dickens)CM-This comment made by Darnay to describe Carton is a pretty harsh comment that was not needed that hurt Carton, that should not have been said.(polysyndeton CM- His comment may be blunt, but it’s the truth. SD-Carton is the type of person that is like a stone statue, “Mr. Carton, who had so long sat looking at the ceiling of the court, altered(fast) neither his place nor his attitude, even in this excitement”. CM- Even in the mitts of exhilaration(fast) Carton is the type of person who isn’t affected. CM- He just sits there, not moving, stuck in his own world. SD- Lastly, Carton has no self confidence, “I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me”. This quote proves that Carton has no self confidence. Because of his low self confidence he is a miserable man(alliteration) who has a drinking problem. CS- Carton is a dejected drunk who needs a boost of self confidence.

TS- To get Carton back to a healthy state, he should follow some simple steps.(Alliteration) SD-First off, Carton needs to stop drinking. CM-Drinking is what gets him into his depressed moods, drinking is the main root to all his problems, drinking is destroying his life. CM- If he would stop drinking he would start to feel better, his misery would go away, and he would become healthier.. SD- Furthermore, Carton needs to stop feeling bad for himself and gain some self confidence. CM- Finding some poise(fast) shouldn’t be a big deal for a grown man, [..]”Maybe we should chug on over to mamby pamby land where maybe we can find some self confidence for you”[..](R. Lee Ermey, Geico Commercial) CM-If Carton heard this line I am sure he would stumble upon some self confidence.(Alliteration) SD- Another way carton can get back to a healthy state is by not working with Stryver. Stryver only talks Carton down, filling his head with disheartening comments, making him feel worse about himself, like a drill sergeant breaks down his men.(Coordinate Cumulative With Simile) CM- When Carton is with Stryver he rapidly (fast) looses all his pride, after all he is the jackal. CS- These adjustments would be very difficult for him to follow, and would take some time, and would be hard work, but after some time Carton would be a transformed person.(polysyndeton)

I believe if Carton would just stop drinking he would be a healthy energetic person that everybody enjoys to be around. He desperately needs to make some changes in his daily life. Along with making changes he will have to make some sacrifices as well, like drinking.

I think I did very well on essay 9. This could be my best essay of the year so far. I checked it over coutless times to make sure there were no errors. I carefully thought out each sentence and carefully blended the quotes. I think on the essay I deserve a B.
