English Learning:

A Road To Success

TS-Throughout the book To Kill a Mocking Bird, there have been many examples of the theme, learning, especially in chapter twenty- one. SD-In Chapter Twenty-one Tom Robinson is brought to court because he is accused of taking advantage of Mayella Ewell. CM- When Jem, Scout, and Dill spent the day listening to this trial, they learned alot.CM- It was very good for them to learn and feel how cruel the world can be.SD- The biggest thing the children learned was that a white jury would put an innocent black man into jail because they were scared it would look bad on them.CM-I found it very powerful when Dill started crying because Mr. Gilmer was talking to Tom Robinson in a hateful way just because he is a negro. CM-They all learned a valuable lesson that African Americans were not treated as equals even when a man’s life is on the line.SD-I also learned many things in this chapter about Mr.Ewell. CM-When Mr.Ewell caught Mayella kissing Tom, he beat her and blamed it on Tom.CM- Mr.Ewell is obviously a heavy drinker and beats his kids when they do something wrong. I don’t understand how the jury could say Tom was guilty when all of the clues clearly showed it was Mr.Ewell who beat Mayella.

TS-In my life the theme learning is constantly occuring everyday in the classroom and at home.SD-Each day when I walk through the front doors of school, I am guaranteed to learn something new. CM-Ironically, right now in History we are learning about the March to Freedom which relates to what Jem, Scout, and Dill are learning in the courtroom. CM- So far, the Tom Robinson case is the best example of the theme, learning, in the book To Kill a Mocking Bird.SD-The theme learning, is also a necessity for every human being because learning is so crucial to success. CM-Without learning, you will never get a good education and will be stuck without a job.CM-Even though learning is not always fun, it is worth it in the long run so you can become a productive person. Without learning there would be no such thing as a doctor or teacher. Imagine a world without these people.CM-The world would be a primitive, boring, confusing place and turn into a game of survival of the fittest. CS- Learning is essential. Without it the world would be complete chaos.

  1. Hi Sam. Let's work on deleting phrases like "I think" and "I believe". They aren't necessary, because everything in your essay is what you think or believe.

    Good luck!

  2. I think that your last chunk is very organized and made a very good point about the book. When you put the name of the book in your essay you need to italicize it. Make sure you are aware of your punctuation. For example: CM-Ironically right now in History. You need to put a comma after "ironically".

  3. I like your first paragraph a lot. I think it is very clear and well written. The second paragraph is still good, but I think that you could get rid of a few "I think's". I also think that the word "learning" is repeated to often. Maybe you should try another synonym like education or knowledge.
